ABC’s Of Hepatitis

You may have heard of this disease somewhere on TV, and not really know much about it. You just know that you have to stay away from the people who have it because apparently, it makes them dangerous. Talking with them could be a hazard for your health, they said. Of course, this isn’t true. But what really causes Hepatitis? Here are some things you should know to fully understand what may be dangerous to your health:

Hepatitis means the inflammation of the liver, and there are 6 types of Hepatitis virus: A, B, C, D, E, and G. But, let us talk about the most common ones which are: A, B, C. They are acquired almost the same way, but with a few distinct signs and symptoms.

The difference between these 3 are:

  • Hepatitis A: This is characterized by an ‘acute’ inflammation on the liver. It gets better on its own; however, contact with anyone who has this may be dangerous, and there should absolutely be no sharing of food and water, as they would get infected too. Anyone injecting illegal drugs may be affected as well, as it is a consequence of ‘sharing’ bodily fluids. Symptoms include abdominal pain or discomfort.
  • Hepatitis B: This is both acute and chronic or an ongoing illness. This is spread through blood and water. This can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer if not treated immediately. More than 600,000 people die annually because of this virus, but this is most geographically distributed around the Sub-Saharan areas. Symptoms usually show up after 4 months and these are Fever, joint pain, and dark urine.
  • Hepatitis C: Usually diagnosed with a chronic disease. This may be acquired through mosquito bites, kissing, or contact in general with anyone who may bear it. Having gotten a tattoo may be one of the reasons too. Those who have had a blood transfusion before the year 1992 may need to get checked. Symptoms include Dark urine, fever, jaundice, itchy skin, fatigue, among many others.

Three of these can be acquired usually through contact, so you should learn to be wary when it comes to sharing utensils, dips, and the like, as saliva may be shared, putting you at risk. The kind of Hepatitis virus you have may only be determined through laboratory checks, so from now on, try not to miss a Doctor’s appointment, especially if you have experienced any of the ones listed above.

However life-threatening these viruses are, these can be prevented and treated. For prevention against these 3 types, Doctors would suggest you keep up with your vaccinations.
