Knowing the FDA-Recommended Ways to Dispose Your Medication

Have you cleaned your medicine cabinet and first aid kit for expired or unused medication yet? Make sure to set a time to do so. Remember, keeping medications that are old, unused, and forgotten is just a disaster waiting to happen.

As a pharmacy in Lakeland, Florida, we at Quick N Save Pharmacy have personally seen just how disastrous these can be. That said, this isn’t that surprising considering that according to one Consumer Reports in 2017, about a fifth of Americans haven’t cleaned out their cabinets in the last 5 years.

Don’t be part of the statistics, dispose your expired medications now, including those that you don’t remember when they were prescribed for you, as well as those medical supplies in Florida that are past their effectiveness.

Here are the FDA-recommended ways to do so:

  1. Take them to a take-back site or program.
  2. If a take-back site isn’t available or is too inconvenient for you, please refer to the FDA’s flush list. If they are on the list then it’s ok to immediately flush them on your toilet.
  3. If your medication isn’t included in the flush list, then you may mix them with an unappealing substance in a sealed plastic bag. This may be anything from dirt to coffee grounds to even cat litter. Then throw away the bag in your household trash.
  4. Whichever method you use, make sure to scratch out all your personal information to make it unreadable.

Do you have questions about disposing your medications? Don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

We also now have the COVID vaccine and Covid testing in Florida available in our pharmacy.
